(Amsterdam, NY)Mildred Elley, a Capital Region college that has been educating students in vocational opportunities for more than 100 years, will be hosting a press conference and ribbon cutting at its new extension site on May 8, 2025, at 10:30am, located in Amsterdam, NY. The new location will offer classes to prospective students toward a Licensed Practical Nursing or Clinical Medical Assistant Certificate with the benefit of being able to further their career close to home. Students will begin the program in Amsterdam and finish up in Albany.

The country is currently facing a national healthcare nursing crisis. The latest data shows that New York is projected to face a shortage of almost 40,000 nurses by 2030. In the Mohawk Valley Region alone, there is an 83.3% general shortage of Licensed Practical Nurses and an 85.7% shortage of Certified Medical Assistants. This is compared to a 26.1% and 37.5% shortage in New York City, respectively. By opening this new extension site, Mildred Elley is demonstrating its commitment to investing in the next generation of New York State healthcare workers.

When looking at the Amsterdam area, we recognized the large gap in options for professionals to continue their education in the medical field. This was reinforced after speaking with local medical facilities, including St. Mary’s Healthcare, Nathan Littauer Hospital, and Capstone Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, where they shared there is a vast staffing shortage of trained medical professionals and a need for CNAs, medical assistants, and LPNs within their facilities,” said Faith Ann Takes, president, CEO, and owner of Mildred Elley. “We look forward to helping to bridge this gap with our new extension site and bring more opportunities for jobs and prosperity Amsterdam and its surrounding areas.

In an additional effort to help close the gap on healthcare shortages, Mildred Elley has partnered with the Caring Gene® Career Pathways Training Program (CPT). Through this partnership, Mildred Elley can offer eligible New York State residents and residents of certain bordering states full coverage of tuition, books, and academic fees while pursuing Practical Nursing and Clinical Medical Assistant Certificates. This program will enable those who want to enter the healthcare field as Nurses or Medical Assistants with the opportunity with little to no financial burden. Their focus can be on their studies and the skills they need to strengthen New York’s healthcare workforce.

I came to Mildred Elley to pursue a career in nursing. For many years I was on the fence about going back to school and finally decided to do it. It was the best decision I could have ever made. The professors and the office staff are incredible and understand that many of us students are working and have families. The support is a breath of fresh air; these people will go out of their way to help you succeed. My confidence is growing, and I am truly grateful for everything they have done. By far one of the best decisions I have ever made,” said nursing student Jenna Colasanti.

Students participating in the program can earn their certificate in as little as 14 months and can earn NHA certification in phlebotomy, EKG, certified clinical medical assistant, and certified medical administrative assistant. In addition, students can attend to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Hands-on and clinical internships in Amsterdam will also be offered.
