  • What does a Hospital Coder do?

    (Medical Records & Health Information Tech)

    Hospital Coders organize and manage patient records in a hospital setting. Numeric codes are assigned to patient procedures and categorized. Coders have to follow medical confidentiality requirements

    Typical duties of a Hospital-Based Coder generally include but are not limited to:

    • To properly classify medical data from patient records
    • Review patient records
    • Assign numeric codes for each diagnosis and procedure

     

    What kind of income will I earn?

    Income is based on a variety of factors, geographic location, experience, longevity and employer salary bases. The U.S. Department of Labor reports that Medical Records and Health Information Technicians can earn between $21,240 and $53,430 a year with an average of $39,340.     The Hospital-Based Coding program is a 704 hour course that includes an 80 hour internship which will give you on-the-job training for your career. Many internships turn into permanent employment for our graduates.
